Dusky Ridges is a 200 hectare (500 acres) farm situated 5 kms from Te Anau. A breeding flock of 1500 sheep are farmed for their meat and wool. Lambs born in the spring (September) are raised and sold in the summer and autumn for export worldwide.
200 breeding deer are also farmed. A practice quite unique to New Zealand, developed in the Fiordland area in the 1970's and 80’s, wild deer were captured using helicopters and relocated to nearby farms (including Dusky Ridges). Red and wapiti (elk) deer fawn in the late spring (November) and are sold for export one year later.
Some cattle are also grazed when the season allows.
A small flock of alpacas complete the livestock scene. A faithful team of working farm dogs are the support staff!
